Blender is an open source software 3D modeling program, available for various operative systems. Among the features there are UV editing, animation tools, video editor and a game engine with physics simulator. Blender is still in development, and recent versions of Blender has added sculpting and GLSL shading, improvements to the water simulation and big improvements to hair and fur rendering. Blender has a large fan community and lot's of documentation and tutorials are available online.

History

Blender was developed by the Dutch animation studio NeoGeo and Not A Number Technologies (NaN). It was initially distributed as shareware, but when NaN went bankrupt in 2002 it's community bought the source code for a one-time payment of €100,000. Today it is licenses under the GNU General Public License, and is insured by the Blender Foundation.
