I am the Director of Operations of Iowa's first Fab Lab. I am a biomedical Engineer by training, and a maker by any other measurement. My Fab Lab is called The S.T.E.A.M. Room Fab Lab, because we wanted to add Art to STEM. My facility will be opening in May of 2014 in Iowa City, IA. We are rather large, at 17,000 square feet. yup. Three zeros after that 17. Most of the space is for dedicated workshops, which our members can rent. It has been a successful model in other locations, and that, combined with our membership fees will pay the bills for our center. We still offer free hours, and will also be offering scholarships for people who can not afford our prices. We are a non-profit, and as such are charging as little as possible to cover the costs of the center. If you would like to know more, please check out our website, at
