3D-selfie

We used an XBox camera and ReconstructMe to print 3D-selfies of ourselves. This was a fun introduction to 3D-modeling. In Makerbot, Support and Raft functions were necessary to make certain parts of the models work. It created an extra long beard for me, which I almost left in place.

We printed in Low quality so the texture was quite rough. I tried just a couple of sweeps with a small file to try how it behaves. This form would've taken way too long to file and sand so I left it as it is. I then found info on finishing PLA. Apparently hand sanding or a rock tumbler with a polishing compound are the ways to go. Acetone will melt PLA too much and probably won't result in a gloss finish as it does for ABS. After the surface is sanded, a Automotive Filler / Primer made by Rust-oleum or a similar product can then be used to seal the surface. You can then use steel wool to polish. A coat of spray paint can then be applied if needed. I haven't tried these method yet. The next print I'll just make in High quality and hopefully that'll be enough for the selfie at least.
