The Lyngen Alps that dominate the Lyngen skyline are known not only through out Norway but a favorite tourist destination for international visitors. Lyngen is unique because its mountain to sea viewsheds can change greatly depending on elevation. From the interior the mountains dominate while near the sea the mountains can be completely hidden. These views are important as they offer possibilities for Lyngen to diversify its economic base and share their alps and culture with the rest of the world.

Lyngstuva, the northern most point on the Lyngen peninsula. A shipwreck helps show the reality that the people of the area face with life in this type of environment.
Settlement and development
The majority of the population live along the coast of the southern and western areas of the peninsula. Industrial areas can be located in concenrated area like Furflaten or spread along the coast like the fish processing facilities or the concrete plant. All of these areas of development are without tall standing structures. Along the national protected alps interior the occasional set of transmission lines can be seen.
The towns of Lyngen are still alive with fishing activity so it is not unusual to recognize the smells of the sea. This can be more intense depending of the arrival of fresh caught shrimp or drying fish. There was a time where the local fish processing facility was experimenting by using their waste fish to produce biofuel. After this, even the cars smelled like fish.
