My first 3D scan

So today we got an assignment to scan something for the 3D printer with our cameras. I really didn't have any object to scan, so I decided to make an origami. I will now guide you step by step through the process. It will not be smooth sailing for me, since I have never made anything like this before. But I survived the laser and vinyl cutters so maybe I'll get through this too.

Step 1. Monday 25.1.2016 11.00(ish)

So first things first, making the origami. I used to do a lot of origami but now I found myself looking for instruction on how to make a crane. A crane. I feel like a noob. But google helped and i managed to get a crane made. The problem in scanning with pictures is, that white objects don't scan well. Which colored paper I used then you ask? White. Of course. 'Cause I don't think ahead apparently. I solved the white issue by coloring the vital edges black with a permanent marker so camera would have more reference points. I then rigged my"art piece" to the table with a clamp, tuned the lighting and started to take shots. I ended up with 28 pictures that I'm now trying to download to Dropbox. The WiFi has some issues today so it's painfully slow, but we'll get there. I hope.

UPDATE: At 12.03 I have finally managed to download all the pictures to Dropbox. Now I have to download them to the computer and then to the 123D Catch program. So not even nearly there yet.

Step 2. Same day, 12.20

Got the pictures from Dropbox to the computer, wrote a lot of stuff here that vanished after pressing the save button, then the internet said "lol no" again. I managed to download the pictures to the 123D Catch program and now it has been creating a capture for around forty minutes or so. I really hope it didn't get stuck on that 86% it's on right now. Marko's computer froze at this point and Henna's computer didn't work at all today. The machines are fighting against us and the internet gods are not on our favor, but we'll keep trying.... UPDATE: At 13.40 I got an error message. Apparently Gmail is having some issues and that's why my capture was unfinished. Trying again with my husbands email, fingers crossed everybody!

Step 3. Same day, 15.51

And finally after several errors and issues and problems and coffee cups i finally have a capture, that doesn't really look that good. I'm going to ask weather it is enough or if it can me modified, if not i'll have to take a whole lot of pictures again... NOTE TO SELF: When you manually set reference points and press submit, it calculates everything again adding those points to the calculation. So It takes again a lot more time. I might not finish this today... Aaaaand six minutes later I get an unknown error again and I'd have to start the whole thing over. No thanks. No more 123D Catch. I might try Autodesk Memento next, but probably I'll just leave that till tomorrow.

Back at step 2. Tuesday 26.1.2016 10.30(ish)

Changed computer to one that has Memento already installed, I tried the 123D Catch once more this morning with the same results as yesterday. Memento is at least loading really well, let's hope the outcome is as pleasing. Marko's Ring didn't come out quite as expected but Henna's knit and yarns came out perfect. I'm trying to use by waiting time usefully by learning how to use Tinkercad with it's lessons. It's seems to be a rather simple program which suits me better than well.
