Working on the final project

My name is Ólafur E. Lárusson and I´am a participant in Fab Academy in Vestmannaeyjar. Now I have already made me finalprojekt "medicine box" Or I´m started working on it ! Now I´m already made some drawings by Google sketcup but it is going very slowly.

Why medicine box?

Both my parents now reside in a home for the elderly and, as with many residents, they need to take medicines - in their case once a day. The elderly, and others, often have problems with short term memories - what they have done, need to do, and so on. This started me thinking about about the possibilities of a designed medicines box which would give an indication when the time was right to take the medicine required. Which could prove useful to both patients and staff.

So I started putting together my experiences with Fab Lab and prepare something that could be used in such a home, and possibly elsewhere too. I spoke to the nursing staff about my ideas - they seemed enthusiastic, and showed me what they were currently using. I promised to bring the prototype, discuss the thinking behind it, and go through its workings. Using the design program Google Sketchup I put together a 3D video and placed that on You Tube. Then, using the Inkscape program, to draw and cut out with the Epilog Laser. Acrylic plastic was used for the basic material, while the box is assembled by presfit.

The node board was milled, so as to control the operation of the LCD light which will provide the control indicators. When a compartment has been opened, and the medicine taken, then a light will indicate the the compartment is empty. The material is Acrylic and all components come from the Fab Lab center here in Vestmannaeyjar, which originated with CBA Boston. The raw material and components cost about 3000 Icelandic crowns about $ 250 ( kronur).

In addition to the normal staff, I talked with the head nurse, explaining my ideas and comparing my product with what was already available. This cooperation enabled me to highlight the strengths of the product and probe for any weaknesses.

This is a completely new invention, produced solely in the Fab Lab in Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands). It should well be able to stand a test in the sort of environment where its use is planned.

One line of further development would be to experiment with modernising, along the above lines, the existing medicine boxes already in use, which could reduce costs.

We started monday the 10.january 2011. The bootcamp Fablab is conducted be Frosti Gíslason the manager. After a short talk about the software we are going to use. We started designing some things we later use the Roland cutter. In the begining it went well. Yesterday we used the Shopbot machine and made "Igloo" snowhouse. I will inform all about whatt we are doing this week hear at this page next day until we are finising the boodcamp here and use some picture to show what we have made at the course. So far it has been very intresting and the group has been in good feeling and working well to gether.File:Hjerleid.pdf
