Currently doing a master degree in digital creation (Master Création Numérique) at the Jean-Jaures Toulouse University, I have to develop a project regarding to my study. The purpose of my project is the doubt. In a world where everything looks controled more and more by science and technologies, I want to give a biger place to the doubt and question its place in our lifes. For that, I want to do and immersive and interactive movie. 360° projetable but the projection of the scene will be done juste in the same direction as the sepactator’s look. The story will be done by the specificities of sequence each spectator will creat.

It is an ambitious project because it takes into account lot of field and knowledges that I haven't seen in my life and i have to learn lot of things by myself. There are the differents field I must do:

The doubt and the reality

As I said just befor, the doublt is the subject of my project. In a world where everythings look controled more and more by science and technologies, I want to give a bigger place to the doubt. I want to create an immersive instalation where a movie is projetable on 360° controling by the spectator. The movie is projetable in a cylinder that would be a kind of cylindrical white screen but the room where it is projected is darck, black. The spectator will be able to see smothing only by the light of the projector when this one will project (see the part "plug and code"). Entering inside the cylindrical space is a metaphor for fertilization, like a spermatozïde come inside an ovum. Once the spector is inside, he will put a headphone on his head that would be the condition of the actualisation of the virtual world. The condition to see this new world. the fact os putting the advanced-headphone on his physical head is also a metaphor for intrauterine development. This is a part of his new body to live in this world where his (pysical body is not enought). Once his development is done, the projector will turn on and display an image of the movie. The firt lights are like the birth in this world. however the first thing displayed is not predetermined. There is not begining and no end. The first scene that he will see will depend of the sequence of this virtual world such as we donc choos the date and the place where we born. His eyes are not his phisicals eyes only anymore but also the projector and it his the same for his brain that will be and hybride with the advanced-headphone (Helmet-brain).

There will be a scenario that will happen in this movie but the spectator is allowed, like in the real life, to be attentiv at this one and follow it or not at all. However sometimes, also like in the real life, some thing will happen in the place where he is and even if he would have preferd to not see it, he will be obliged and a victime of the environement. He will not be able to controle everything.

There will also be a sound design in 360° and it will creat some stimuli thaht the spectaor will be able to find the source or not. These sound will be relative to the scenario displayed and what happen in this scenarios. There will also be some sound that will come from the real. In fact the instalation will not be totaly disconnected from the reality and all the soudn that will happend arround will be earth be the spectator. Furthermore the will be some kind of "parasitic sounds" that would uestion the nature of these onces thank to their ambiguity. Are they from the virtual or the real? That woul also question the place of the doubt, our critical sens and our perception of the reality.

To create this questionnement the axe of the cilinder will be the key. The place where it's possible to show this virtual place. The place where the doubt is challenged. The place where, what we call knowledges, and certainty are challenged. The - DUBITAXIS- .

The idea

The pricipe

The idea is to create a cylindrical white space where the movie will be displayed. On the top and in the axe of this one there will be a small projector that will be linked to a servo-motor. The projector is the eyes of the spectator in this virtual world. However the eyes are nothing if they are not connected to the brain. Taht why the control of this projector will be donne by the helmet brain. In this helmet-brain there is an sensor that calculate the orietation of the spectaor. These data are transmited to and arduino that controle the orientation of the servo. These data are also send to and 3D realtime softwear which controle the 360° orientation orientation of a camera. This camera is like a representation of the eyes of the spectator in the virtual world and turn int he same direction as the spectator. These interractions will be done like a game engine.

For the sound, the design wil be donne inside this 3D real time softwear wich is BLENDER ( Like that each sound will always have its own specifical place in 360° independent of the orientation of the spectator orientation.

The second idea that I had t do it is to use arduino and processing. This is the most simple way to do my project because there are developed together and softwares have facilities to communicate together. Furthermore there are lots of exemple of the hybridation on internet done by the arduino's and processing community. To do it I would creat a 3D scene in processing with a cylinder on wich one I will apply a texture as a vidéo. Then I'll use the orientation datas sent to the serial port to determine the orientation of the cylinder in this scene. The limit of this solution is the sound design because Processing is initally not done to manage sound and more 3D sound design. You can see the code arduino and processing in the section (Plug and code!).

The instalation

The instalation visual concept

In a first time I wanted to do a cylindrical instalation using a big mettalic structure with a multifunctional box on the top wich would contain all my electronical devices, my servo and the projector. I thaught using a kind of white fabric to project.

But I'm currently working on an other idea that would be cheaper and mor beautifull in the same time: If I find the good room in my university to plug my multifunctionnal box, it wouldn't do all the complex and expensive metalic structure. I would let it hang from the ceiling. I would just have to creat a lighter strucure with some multicouche for the circle and some bars to keep it rigide and linked to the ceiling.

The reducer

The servo I use for my project hasn't a angle range large enought. In fact it is a 180° and I want a 360° one. So I would use a mechanical-reducer of 1/2. For that I hade used the lasercutter to cut a gears in order to have 1/2 rate. To design it I used the website: . I also made a case to contain theme with the halp of the website: .

That was the final result of my reducer. But it is not the one I'll use in my final project because there are too much errors. In fact the axes are not precise and it is not reliable.

That's why I did a second reducer not using makercase website but using the thikness of the materials to have the best fit between the gears and have something reliable. Furthermore I designed it to be removable in case of mystakes or problems with something inside, that's why there are a lot of screws and nuts inside.

The brain shaped headphone extension

I have designed an extension for my stereo headphone in order to become this "Helmet-brain". I designed it for two reasons: the first is to make sure that people put the stereo headphone in the good dirrection and the other is to have a place where the electronics components can be stoked. In fact my project must be immersive. On the one hand the spectator will be inside a cylindrical space where the movie is projected but on an other hand, the sound itself must be listened in 360° thank to this stero headphone. To be consistent with the film the sound comming through the right stereo speaker must be eard by the right ear and not the inverse that would break all the immersion! That's the role of this extension wich must oblige the spectator to put the headphone in the good way and avoid the wrong one. I use a SUPERLUX HD 681B headphone and the design must fit with it. For that I used the two metal hoops on the top of the headphone to fix the brain extension. I used to take into account the diameter and the flexibility of theme to exploit their mecanical properties as well as possible without gluing or breaking it. I also did some test with the 3D printer used in the Reykjavik Fablab (Makerbot replicator 2) to find the best orientation of the .stl file. That is to say to determine the strongest clip the orientation of the layers make. Finaly the difference of srongness was not ery different and the best solusion for my project was the first orientation (aligned to the maker bot) even if the strongest looked being the 45° one. In fact I did this choise to have a good compromise between strongness and beautifull shape of the layers and this one looked the best. Finaly I decided to print this lid like this with the to in the top dirrection because it would not have to create some support on the external face and creat a smooth surface on the active part of the clip. To finish, then I lasercutted four small shapes identical two by two which are screwed on the headphone in order to bloc the extension on the headphone's metal hoops and make is rigid.

Finaly I made this design and I printed and cut it:

Then I cut a copper sheet. I soldered a long wire on this one and I sticked it on my headphone surface. The wire passes through the headphone hybrid extension to join the copper sheet. This copper sheet will be used as an antenna with the arduino. In fact the human body electrical field will be caught by it and it will send an impulsion to the arduino to say "ok computer, there is somebody, I detect the electricity of his head, you can project the film!"

Servo angle follows the sensor position regarding to the North declinaison

what components must do in my project?
I started to develope this topic on an other page thaht you can read the first parthere where I show how I did to control the position a servo motor using a magnetique sensor (HMC5883L). With an arduino UNO the code use the orientation of the sensor (refer to the North pole) to controle the servo. So the servo is positionned on the same value as the sensor wihch is the Headingdegree. This is refreshed each loop.

Projector display the movie if sensors are activated

In my project I want the project to display the movie only if the spectator is under the projector AND if he has the apropriated headphone on his head (the "Helmet-brain"). For that, I use an ultrasonic sensor which calculate the distance between the projector bottom of the projector and the ground. If the distance is less than what it is expected, thit sensor send a positive value. On the headphone part there will be a kind of push button on the headphone. If this one is put on the speactator head, this will activate the pushbutton and also send a positiv value. It will be only on that cas (if the two sensor are activated) that the projection will be. For that I use a servo-motor. On this servo there is a carboard arm fixed that is large enought to hide the projector's lens. By default the cardboard is in position to hide the lens that is to say the servo orientation is on 0°. It is only if the two previous sensor are activated that the arduino will say to the servo to go to an other position (100°). So the lens path will be free. If not, it wil stay on 0° hand hide the lens.


The wire length problem

In my instalation I want to use a sensor on the head of the spectator (that is to say inside the headphone extension!) which will control the orientation of a servo-motor above him. The distance between these two components is aproximatly equal to the jack wire of my headphone (2m50cm). The problem is that the more the wire is long the more it will create an internal resistance and it would not sent the data of the sensor to the microcontroler. That's why a wireless coommunication could be usefull like wifi or bluetooth. But I tryied anyway to plug a long wire from the arduino to the copper sheet as an antenna to see if it would work. It didn't. But!!.. when I plugged the jack cable to the computer the two metters antenna worked! Let's see what will be the bast solution...

Let's go Micro!

I designed the helmet box to containte sensors only. I thought the sensors would work with long wires but actually not all of theme. That's why I bought a smaller microcontroller to remplace my arduino UNO an to fit inside the helmet box. It is the Genuino micro (the small version of micro-controlers of arduino for europe). And I gluged it like this to create a serial communication of the headingdegree to the compute. Then I combined it with Processing to control the cylinder orientation with the HMC5883L orientation.

The tests

Test of the headphone detection

I did some tests for my project the first one was the test of the reducer with the arduino code which controle the servo orientation regarding to the HMC5883-L sensor (North position). But it definitly did'nt worked well because the rotation axes weren't hold well because there were no guidances.

The second test with the new reducer was better. I used the thikness of the material to creat a kind of guidance and the rotation is more "pure".

I also tested the helmet detection antenna.

A 360° movie

The Scenario

The 360° camera I use
For the moment the scenario of the movie projected is not totaly determined but the subject will also dealing with the doubt, the reality, the science, the technologie, the humman perception, the freedom, the languages, the madness, the relationship to the other, th identification, the time... Dealing with the sens the spectator will give to the scenario actualy. It may be an open work of art but, to do that, I decided to create a kind of creazyness purpose scenario.

An man stays the most part of his time in the same place, the same room. He is not rich, not far from being homeless but above all he is sad, disapinted. Dreaming of liberty, far from the world he knows. Far from what he undergo he is in the middle of the icelandic landscape. With nothing more and nothing less than the nature. Its extrem conditions and sometimes one or two houses. The spectator see this character when he is in the dirty room but not when icelandic landscapes are displayed. Sometimes the charartre interract with somme item of the scene because of the senario but not when there are the icelandic landscapes. The items stays on the "same place" on the cylinderprojection even if the scene is 5000 km far away. The scenario is also focused on the travel and the spiritual escape because the spectator doesn't know actualy if it is the character who is crazy and dreams about landscapes or if it is the spectator himself who physicly embody the role of an other charactere. A charactere that he never sees (because he is his eyes), who is physicly in the icelandic landscape and thinking, imagining other people who hasn't the chance he has.

Since I am currently in Iceland, I am taking care of recordings the Icelandic landscapes with my 360° camera. For that I use a Samsung gear 360 camera. You can see there a small part of what kind of plan I have taken.
